Bushwalking
A bushwalk is probably the best way to enjoy the alpine air, spectacular views and the 'Sound of Music'-style scenery. Whether you're up for a gentle meander or full on hike, you'll find a walk that suits in the Snowies.
Mount Kosciuszko and the Main Range
For a bushwalking adventure suitable for everyone, take the Crackenback chairlift from Thredbo to start the walk to Mount Kosciuszko, the country's highest mountain, and walk along the rooftop of Australia. Thredbo's sunrise guided walks are well worth the early wake up call. Alternatively start your walk to Mount Kosciuszko from Charlotte Pass. Mountain bikes can also use this path, but be sure to leave the bike at Rawsons Pass to make the final trek on foot.
More challenging is the 21.5 km Main Range loop hike starting and ending at Charlotte Pass. The walk goes past magnificant glacial lakes and streams and affords splendid views that stretch all the way to Victoria.
Australian Alps Walking Track
A 650 kilometre track through the high country of Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT. The track climbs our highest mountains and crosses exposed high plains. It passes through magnificent tall forests and stunted snow gum woodlands and visits sites rich in history. www.australianalps.deh.gov.au
Bicentennial National Trail
The longest marked trekking route of its kind in the world, stretching an extraordinary 5,330 kilometres from Cooktown in tropical North Queensland, through the Snowy Mountains, to Healesville in Victoria. http://home.vicnet.net.au/~bnt
Hume and Hovell Walking Track
The track commemorates the overland journey made by Hume and Hovell in 1824-25 from the settlement in New South Wales to sea in Victoria. Where possible, the track follows the original route as far as the NSW border. It skirts around the high mountain ranges and crosses some farming country and forestry lands. www.john.chapman.name/longwalk.html
