From Melbourne

Total driving time: approximately seven to nine hours, depending on route.

There are a handful of ways to get to the Snowies from Melbourne; each route has its own appeal. Following are three options:

  1. Take Highway One through Gippsland, turning at Cann River onto the Monaro Highway. From Bombala head north to Cooma.
  2. Pass the turn-off at Cann River and continue to Merimbula, then Bega. Turn onto the Snowy Mountains Highway, which takes you up Brown Mountain to Nimmitabel and on to Cooma. (This picturesque route is slightly longer so you should allow an extra two hours.)
  3. From Melbourne, travel the Hume Highway to Albury-Wodonga. Head east through Khancoban, and take the Alpine Way through Thredbo to Jindabyne. (During winter, be sure to check road conditions prior to travel.)
