Tumbarumba

Horse Riding at TumbarumbaSituated in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, this area is quickly establishing itself as a superb, cool-climate wine making region.

The powerful combination of snow-capped mountains, forested slopes and gorges, and rolling green pastures tumbling to the water?s edge makes for a picture perfect destination.

Tumbarumba was established in the 1850's, as gold discoveries here and at Kiandra led to an influx of population which, in the mid 1860's made Tumbarumba a centre of considerable importance.

During the 1870's and 80's, a large number of farming families came to the district from the goldfields of NSW and Victoria. Almost all of these properties underwent financial vicissitudes between the 1890's and 1940 and most were subdivided either voluntarily or compulsorily between 1912 and 1949. The subdivision and settlement schemes played an important part in improving the capacity of properties and the coincidence of the wool boom in the early 50's with post World War 2 settlement saw a big increase in the application of superphosphate and the sowing of improved pastures.

Today, a new rural resurgence and a tendency for people to return and retire in Tumbarumba because of its aesthetic appeal has seen the town grow and prosper.
