The original Adamniaby township was relocated in the 1950s when the Eucumbene River was dammed to form Lake Eucumbene, the central storage of the snowy mountains Hydro-electric Scheme. Lake Eucumbene has the capacity to hold nine times the volume of water of Sydney Harbour.
More than 100 buildings were dismantled and re-erected at the new township site before the surrounding valleys were flooded. One of the original churches is located by the lake at Old Adaminaby, 9km south west of town.
Adaminaby’s proximity to Selwyn Snowfields makes it a popular base for skiers in winter. For the rest of the year it attracts people keen on horse riding, bushwalking, fishing and water sports.
The lakeside villages of Old Adaminaby and Anglers Reach afford magnificent lake vistas and relaxed accommodation.
