Australia’s highest town at an altitude of 1488m above sea level. The town was built by the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority in the 1950s as a base for the northern administration of the Scheme.
Cabramurra is a pretty scenic town and while there is no accommodation available the public are welcome to call in and visit the cafe, newsagency and store, re-fuel and view the collection of Snowy Mountains Scheme photographs. The Cabramurra services are the closest for visitors to Selwyn Snowfields and people travelling on the Elliott Way.
Many years ago, a resident near Cabramurra recorded that eight feet (2.4m) of snow fell in just eight hours.
