About The Snowy Mountains ·

Weather

Mountain weather is notoriously unpredictable. Winter temperatures can fall suddenly to below minus 20 degrees celsius and it’s not uncommon for snow to fall on the peaks of the Main Range mid summer, so it’s worth getting a weather forecast before heading out for the day.

Whether you are setting out in summer or winter, always carry waterproof jackets and a jumper. When walking or camping in the mountains, always inform friends or family of your intended route and when you are likely to return. You can also enter your details in the Walkers Registry Book at the Snowy Region Visitor Centre, located in Jindabyne.

When driving in winter, June long weekend until October long weekend, please note the following:

Many minor roads will be closed.

Some major roads will be closed, for example the Cabramurra-Khancoban road, and the Kosciuszko Road from Perisher Valley to Charlotte Pass.

Drivers must carry snow chains when travelling in Kosciuszko National Park in winter. This applies only to two-wheel-drive vehicles. Snow chains can be hired from service stations and ski hire outlets in the region. One way chain hire is available at Jindabyne Shell Station, Khancoban Road House and the Adaminaby BP Service Station.

Check road conditions before you set out through the Snowy Mountains. RTA 132 701.
