Snowy Mountains Tumut region celebrates NAIDOC in October

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Aboriginal Discovery programs in the Tumut region in partnership with Cooee Cottage, the Brungle Tumut Community Working Party and the Tumut Shire Council is holding additional National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) events in October.

NPWS Tumut Visitor Services Manager Mark Lees said traditional owners of lands around Tumut requested some activities be held in October to complement the celebrations already held in July.

“On Wednesday, October 5, we will hold a morning cultural demonstration in the Birrimal Waga Amphitheatre in Tumut.

“The public are invited to enjoy Aboriginal cultural presentations, demonstrations and take part in hands-on activities.

“Come on a bush tucker walk, weave baskets and bush ropes using traditional methods.

“On Saturday, October 8, we will hold Harmony Day at Cooee Cottage in Tumut from 11am to 3pm.

“Everyone is invited to taste Kangaroo stew, emu curry, bush tomato sausages, quandong pies and chocolate wattleseed cheesecake.

“We will also hold workshops and share in activities that aim to bring aboriginal and non-aboriginal community members together to share stories and knowledge.

“No matter if you are a local or visitor to the Tumut region this is a day for the whole community to join together and discover the wonders of our local Aboriginal culture.

“This year’s NAIDOC theme is ‘Change: the next step is ours’ so come along and be part of the bright future of reconciliation,” Mr Lees said.
